Giant Sand se formó en 1982 en Tucson (Arizona, su primera formación estaba compuesta por Howe Gelb (Cantante, guitarra y piano), Scott Gerber (Bajo y armónica), Tom Larkins (Batería) ). Fueron pasando artistas como Rainer Ptacek, Paula Jean Brown, Chris Cacavas, Neil Harry. Hasta quedar en la actualidad por Joey Burns (Strum bass strum), John Convertino (Batería y percusiones) y Howe Gelb.

Hay algo más que un gran grupo, algo más que buenas canciones en autoexploraciones como Raw, Astonished (In Memphis) o Bottom line man; hay una experiencia que sólo la vida puede infligir, rezumando entre líneas, escondida en los más ocultos pliegues del sonido. El equilibrio lo imponen las cimbreantes Dusted (For the new millenium), Temptation of egg o Shiver, y hacia el final esa bestia parda que es Satellite-, compenetrándose en una hora de escucha ininterrumpida y absorvente, rugosa y al tiempo destilada, abierta al gran paisaje tradicional pero rotundamente contemporánea.
